Canada Winter Games Halifax 2011: Badminton Draws Link

The Canada Winter Games are on right now in Halifax and the individual events are currently heading into the quarter-final stages. After speaking with some players we’ve discovered that Joseph Rogers has pulled out with an apparent hamstring injury sustained during practice before the event began. Otherwise we don’t have much news for you other than the official results page.

2011 Black Knight British Columbia Junior Elite Series

This past weekend the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club played host to the 2011 Black Knight British Columbia Junior Elite Series. While not all of the countries top players were in attendance the field was nevertheless a strong one with the majority of the top Western Canadian juniors playing.

The finals were dominated by a small handful of names over and over again. Edmonton’s Josephine Wong and Nathan Osborne were present in all three of their respective u16 finals and both took home two titles. Wong took the u16 girls singles and mixed doubles with Osborne. Osborne lost his u16 boys singles to Duncan Yao of Vancouver in two close games but won the boys doubles with Mac Lee also of Edmonton. The girls u16 doubles went to Vanora Lo and Kyleigh O’Donaghue who defeated Josephine Wong and her partner Takeisha Wang. Vanora Lo was Josephine Wong’s opponent in the u16 girls singles final.

The u19 finals were a very similar story to the u16 events but with even more clear domination from a couple of players. Both Nyl Yakura and Christin Tsai won triple crowns with varying degrees of difficulty in their different events. Tsai had a fairly straight forward win in her singles by defeating Bethany So 21-11, 21-13. Yakura’s singles win was a much more arduous affair as Clinton Wong pushed him the distance with Yakura pulling out a 21-18, 16-21, 21-17 win. The girls doubles was the most closely contested u19 final of the day with Christin Tsai and Adrianna Giuffre winning a very close three game match 12-21, 21-14, 21-19 over Bethany So and Vivian Kwok. Yakura teamed up with Nathan Choi to win a lopsided boys doubles final 21-9, 21-19 over Joshua Hurlburt-Yu. Finally the last match of the day was the mixed doubles final where Yakura and Tsai would partner together to defeat Clinton Wong and Kacey Tung 21-13, 21-14.

2011 Canadian National Badminton Championships

Finally our summary report for the 2011 Canadian National Badminton Championships. It was a great tournament and a big thanks goes out to Badminton Canada and the Ontario Badminton Association for doing a great job organizing.

2011 Yonex Ontario Senior Elite Series

Once again we present to you the summary report for yet another Canadian Elite Series. This weekend was the 2011 Yonex Ontario Senior Elite Series in Toronto at Humber College and by far this event was the strongest turn out of the year. The mens singles showcased all of our top players, and only one premiere team was missing from the mens doubles as Derrick Ng and Adrian Liu were not in attendance.

After hearing some positive reviews from our Prairie Elite Series, and some help from Badminton Canada to make this possible we have yet another summary report for you.
